Michaelangelo Merisi Caravaggio, Judith slaying Holofernes, 1599
Caravaggio was an Italian baroque painter. His style: realistic observation of the human state and dramatic use of light had influence on young artists in Rome who were called the “Caravaggisti” or “Caravagesques”. One of the first “Caravaggisti” was Orazio Gentileschi - father of Artemisia Gentileschi. Artemisia also was heavily under Caravaggio’s influence.
